Cystic lesions of the female lower genitourinary tract are commonly identified incidental findings on routine cross-sectional imaging studies. As the volume of computed tomographic (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies including the pelvis continues to increase, radiologists must be familiar with the features of the most common of these cystic lesions to allow their accurate diagnosis and the identification of any complications that may have clinical significance. These lesions, which may have an infectious, inflammatory, or congenital cause, tend to arise in characteristic anatomic locations and have specific imaging features. Most demonstrate signal intensity and attenuation like those of fluid, but they may include enhancing components and variations in signal intensity and attenuation in the presence of hemorrhage, infection, or malignant transformation.
