Fire vs. herbicide?

The economics of herbicides and prescribed fire are compared in managing mesquite (Prosopis) using data from Texas, USA. The analyses indicate that the cost of herbicide treatment would have to be less than half the current cost before it would be economically competitive with fire as a means of controlling mesquite. Fire is not as easy or convenient to use as herbicides for controlling mesquite, but it does offer the opportunity of lowering costs substantially by substituting management for capital inputs to increase profit margins.
