Telematics in rail freight

Although the total volume of freight transported has increased by more than 250 % in the course of the past forty years, the absolute amount of it carried by rail has grown only marginally. This has meant that rail's share in the modal split has gone down at a more or less steady rate from something over 60 % to the current level of less than 15%. Over the same period, the volume of freight transported by road has risen by more than 115% and today accounts for more than 70% of the modal split [4]. This contribution provides answers to the following question: what contribution is telematics in rail freight capable of making to ensure that rail will have a bigger share in the growing transport market in future?
