The European freight-wagon market seems to be moving into a period of cautious recovery. In the course of the past ten years or more, wagon fleets have been radically reduced in size in numerous countries. The phenomenon has been particularly prevalent in eastern Europe, but, in part, western Europe has been affected to a considerable extent too. The end of this "right-sizing" process now seems to be in sight. The Berlin-based consultants, SCI Verkehr, have now completed a new market study. One of its central conclusions is the expectation that approximately four billion euros are going to be invested in the procurement of freight wagons over the three years, 2004-2006. There is a clear trend towards favouring special-purpose vehicles, and the leasing segment of the market is going to continue to grow in importance.
