Use of simulations to support operational infrastructure planning

In the context of operational infrastructure planning, simulations of railway operations are a suitable tool for providing a planning basis for engineering work and signalling systems, especially for analyzing complex installations whose operational requirements are known in considerable detail. This is especially so if a timetable (or at the very least a programme of planned operations) already exists. The aim is to use computers to emulate the real operational sequences that occur when trains are delayed and the railway has to depart from its planned operation. This makes it possible to draw conclusions regarding the planned installations and the likely operational quality. Large railway intersections are the classical field for the use of such simulations.
