The bridge over the Rhine between Strasbourg and Kehl - a cross-border challenge

The bridge being built over the river Rhine between Strasbourg and Kehl is going to improve a key link between the French and German high-speed railway networks. Given its favourable geographic position, the Rhine Rift Valley has been an attractive route for north-south transport going back into antiquity. These movements are augmented by east-west ones where the valleys of the Rhine's tributaries join the main valley in propitiously located places. One of these is in the region of Offenburg, Kehl and Strasbourg, where the Kinzig Valley joins the Rhine valley from the east and the valley from the Col de Saverne joins it from the west.
