An 18-year-old white male patient presented to a small Midwestern hospital at about 10 am complaining of right posterior head pain. The patient had fallen down the stairs at his residence around 2 am, then returned to bed. He woke up later that morning complaining of headache, nausea and general malaise. The patient's mother brought him to the local emergency department (ED) for evaluation. The patient was checked into the ED and evaluated by the physician on duty. The ED physician examined the patient and ordered a CT scan of the brain without contrast to include soft tissue (ie, brain) and bony window settings (ie, skull).
