High-speed train operation was first introduced in Japan in 1964, and then in France and Italy in 1981 and 1992, respectively. Thus, these three countries have gained a wealth of long-term experience as regards behaviour of ballasted track under high-speed traffic loading. At the 20th International Convention of the Working Committee on Railway Technology (Infrastructure) of the Austrian Society for Traffic & Transport Science (OVG), which was held last autumn, papers were presented that highlighted some of this experience, summaries of which are given in this article.
