Extrusions Drive Personal Transporter in New Directions

Segway Inc., of Bedford New Hampshire, uses 20 different aluminum extruded parts in their all-terrain Segway x2 Golf. This special Segway features six subassemblies that contain one or more aluminum extrusions, and five stand-alone extruded aluminum parts (Figure 1). This golf version of the Segway has a built-in extruded attachment to secure a rider's golf bag, and combines advanced balance and control technologies with ultra-strong extruded aluminum tubing that is either powder coated, painted, or anodized. The x2 Golf's Leansteer~(TM) technology intuitively moves with its rider, maneuvering easily over the uneven hills, turns, and bumps of fairways and greens at about 12 miles per hour. The Segway x2 Golf takes advantage of aluminum's lightness, weighing just 136 pounds, with a compact 21" X 33" footprint. The device runs on two lithium-ion batteries with a range up to 14 miles, which is more than 18 holes on a single battery charge.
