Cargill investigates lipid alternatives to antibiotic feed additives

Agricultural company Cargill recently outlined the results of several years of research into alternative feed additives for poultry that could be used instead of antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). AGP use in the fanning industry is of growing concern in many quarters, as it may potentially contribute to the increasing global problem of bacterial antibiotic resistance. AGPs are included in feed at low doses, in order to lower the fat content and increase the protein content of animal tissues, while suppressing pathogens such as Salmonella, Campylobacter and E. coli.
