US DoE re-jigging LNG licensing process amid ongoing applications stampede

The US Department of Energy (DoE) - faced with an ever-lengthening queue of applications to export LNG - has proposed reforming the licensing process and commissioning new studies into the economic implications of huge export volumes: up to 20 Bcf/d or 150 mtpa. Gas Strategies looks at why the DoE wants to make changes, the implications for individual projects, and what the changes might mean for the evolution of LNG export capacity. One thing is abundantly clear: the DoE is preparing itself for the construction of much greater LNG production capacity than anyone could have envisaged as recently as two years ago.
