Many mechanical parts, such as those used inautomobiles, are manufactured in a forging process of special steelbars and wire rods in hot and cold temperature regions. Ordinarily,in these manufacturing processes, secondary processing such asmachining and drawing before or after forging, and various heattreatment processes such as annealing or quenching and temperingare necessary. Because of that, there is strong demand toeliminating processes such as heat treatment processing in order toachieve cost reduction and energy savings. This paper outlines theefforts of Nippon Steel Corporation with regard to eliminatingmanufacturing processes of mechanical parts that use the threetypes of special steel bars and wire rods of bolt steel, softened coldforging steel and high strength micro-alloyed steel for hot forging.
