Autogas-fuelled vehicles will be subject to more stringent emissions standards under new transport rules proposed by the US this month. President Barack Obama aims to cut US oil consumption by 2.2mn b/d by 2025 through the doubling of fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks. As the centrepiece of a strategy to reduce dependence on oil imports by a third, Obama is touting an agreement that will raise the effective, fleet-wide corporate average fuel economy (Cafe) standard to 54.5 miles a gallon (87.7km a gallon) from 27.3 miles a gallon by 2025.
