Reverse Engineering is quite an interesting area of the market when you investigate it more closely. It's always fascinating when you have competing technologies, and when proponents of each are able to offer passionate validations of their respective choices. Hardware devices incorporate either traditional 5, 6, or 7 axis CMM 3D Digitizers, laser tracker or laser scanner technology. The digitizers, whilst apparently an older technology than lasers, offer some surprising advantages in some areas. Reverse Engineering software relies on producing volumes of point cloud data representing sampled points on the surface of a 3D model - the process of tracing a physical mold, model or part for the purpose of measurement, inspection or recreation as a CAD model.
