THIS paper deals with the history and regeneration of timber used as a primary structural material. The UK allowed the old skills to disappear but, today, we are leading the international field in some forms of stress lamination for bridges. There are a small number of Engineers working in the discipline but many more are needed if there is to be a modern revolution in Timber Engineering. Success can bring reduced costs and greater sustainability.
