There is currently just one Member of Parliament who has had a career in research science, Dr Julian Huppert MP. There are a few more with related backgrounds in science and engineering, such as Chi Onwurah MP and George Freeman MP, but the overall picture isn't great, Compare that with some other professions. 2010 saw the election of 156 businesspeople, 90 people from politics, 86 lawyers, 38 people from the media, and 10 farmers - all valuable professions, to be sure, but there's a bit of an imbalance. It's not much better in the civil service - the overwhelming majority of Whitehall Permanent Secretaries (the equivalent of a Chief Exec in government departments) have backgrounds in the arts and humanities rather than science and engineering.
