There are two ways to counter the gloominess of the winter garden; take a tropical holiday or plan a new garden with a tropical twist. In the northern half of the North Island, subtropical plants are still the epitome of horticultural chic but in thesouth you'll need to substitute the tender for the tough. Use hostas, crinums and flashy canna lilies for a lush look in summer and console yourself in winter with thoughts of bluebells, fritillarias, tulips, peonies and all those other cold-climate wonders that we further north are deprived of.
