In a sharply focused piece, Paul Wainwright argues that Margaret Haywood, late of the Royal Sussex Hospital, was not unfairly disciplined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and that support for her case is in some important respects ill judged. The argument has two main components. First, Haywood was guilty of a breach of patient confidentiality, an activity that can, in accordance with procedures, lead to being struck off. Second, this breach was serious and morally significant. Whether its significance is of the degree that justifies ending someone's career Wainwright doesn't say. Thus, in brief, not only did she break the rales, she was wrong to break them.
