摘要

A summary of the Mexico City Diabetes Study is presented. This study aimed to characterize the prevalence, incidence and natural history of type 2 diabetes and related cardiovascular risk factors in a low income cohort in Mexico. The results were compared to those of the San Antonio Family Diabetes Study (based in San Antonio, Texas, USA). The populations in the 2 studies had a similar genetic admixture and it is assumed that they therefore have similar genetic predisposition to diabetes. However diabetes prevalence was lower in Mexicans. Diets and physical activity were compared between the 2 studies. The Mexican-American diet was higher in fat and energy than the Mexican diet and Mexican-Americans took less exercise than Mexicans. It is suggested that environment is the driving force behind the differences in diabetes prevalence between these groups.
