Effect of long term intake of ethanol on nutritional status of rats.

Control and ethanol-fed rats were fed on a standard control diet; ethanol-rats were also given given ethanol in the drinking water, with the dose increasing gradually from 5% in the first week to 30% at week 30. Food intake in the ethanol-fed rats was significantly lower than in control rats during the entire experimental period. Fluid consumption was also lower in ethanol-fed rats, although at the beginning of the experimental period it was similar in both groups. The intake of total calories washigh in ethanol-fed rats at the induction period and the second month, but was lower for the rest of the experimental period, as a consequence of the lower intake of food. Body weights were lower in ethanol-fed rats, and this difference was significant from the third month until the end of the experimental period.
