Pre-competitive research in the area of diet and health is recognised as a key need both for the health of the nation and the growth of an internationally competitive food industry. In recognition of this, in 2007 the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), in partnership with the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC), established the Diet and Health Research Industry Club (DRINC) with 15 company members. This important initiative is about to enter its final phase with a last call for research proposals recently announced. A number of the project findings and research summaries will be published in a series in Nutrition Bulletin, the first of these articles, by Professor Martin Yeomans, which can be found in this issue.
