It has been stated that crushed, short-acting tablets containing pancreatic enzymes are effective for unclog-ging feeding tubes.1 However, Viokase (Axcan Pharma, Birmingham, AL) and other pancreatic enzymes have been removed from the market.2 The only oral pancreatic products currently approved by the US Food and Drug Administration are enteric coated and are formulated for sustained release. This was an in vitro study to evaluate the removal of enteric coating and release pancreatic enzymes to be used in unclogging feeding tubes. We compared this released enzyme preparation with warm water.
