New cyclopentane carboxylic acid derivs. have formula (I): In (I), X is H, an alkali metal atom, or a suitable organic base, R1 is H or 1-3C alkyl, and R2 is 2-8C alkyl, 2-3C hydroxyalkyl, carboxyalkyl, alkoxyalkyl isoalkoxyalkyl, aryl, hydroxyaryl, carboxyaryl, carbalkoxyaryl, nomo- or dialkylaryl, mono- or dihaloaryl, alkoxyaryl, mono- or diarylalkyl, halo-aralkyl, mono- or dihydroxyaralkyl mono- or dialkyloxyaralkyl, hetoroaryl (esp. pyridyl), or heteroaryl-alkyl (esp. furfuryl), or R1 + R2 is 4-6C alkylene or 3-5C alkylene-thioalkylene or alkylene-amino-alkylene. Specific. cpds. (I) include that in which X and R1 are H and R2 is furfuryl. In an example, this is prepd. by refluxing 91-1g d-camphoric acid anhydride 4 hrs. with 48.6g furfurylamine in 300 ml toluene. Yield 62.6%.
