Due to local charge conservation, charges and their balancing anticharges are kinematically correlated. Balance functions identify the balancing charges on a statistical basis, and can be exploited to study the dynamics of the separation of balancing conserved charges. Here, we show that charges produced later in the collision are more tightly correlated in rapidity, and argue that late-stage production of charge signals existence of a long-lived novel state of matter.
