摘要

As two private companies prepare to submit applications for building interim used nuclear fuel storage sites in the US, it has become clear that the private sector rather than the US government is leading the way in finding at least a partial solution to a problem that has plagued Washington for decades: where to put the country's used nuclear fuel. Both companies are lining up for what is likely to be billions of dollars in revenues should the Department of Energy (DOE) eventually agree to ship commercial spent nuclear fuel to their sites. But these plans depend on a number of other pieces falling into place, not the least of which is Congress passing legislation allowing the DOE to ship fuel to the sites.
