Previous studies conducted with spinal cord injury (SCI) patients have reported that diabetes mellitus (DM), glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia, and insulin resistance are more common among SCI survivors compared with the able bodied population. The normal homeostatic response to glucose challenge in the presence of insulin resistance is increased secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells. Hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance are becoming recognized as atherogenic conditions. Duckworth et al, in their study, reported that 23 of 45 patients with chronic SCI had DM diagnosed as denned by response to a 300-g oral glucose load. Twelve of 23 patients in this study were found to be hyperinsulinemic. Bauman and Spungen compared 100 veterans with SCI to 50 able-bodied veterans and found that 22% of SCI group and only 6% of the control group were diabetic.
