摘要

As one sage put it, 'Everyone talks about the weather, but no one does any thing'. Well the February storms in the southern North Island certainly gave everyone plenty to talk about, and if we did not do anything, then the storms certainly did. This was an unusual storm, not because it occurred in February, because February is capable of delivering as severe a storm as any month. It was unusual because it came mainly from the south rather than the north. Normally, New Zealand is covered by anti-cyclonic, high pressure systems in late summer and any disrupting storms will be tropical systems, often full blown cyclones moving south. This was a storm system that came from the deep south.
