AK introduces anti-germ coating

The nation's fist antimicrobial home will contain steel coated with a compound that suppresses the growth of bacteria, mold, and fungus. AK Steel will provide the coated stainless and carbon steel. Agion Technologies of Wakefield, Mass., developed the antimicrobial compound, called Agion. The 11,000-square-foot home is under construction on 130 hillside acres in Simi Valley, Calif.The coating contains silver zeolite, which acts as a pump that causes the controlled release of silver ions in the presence of moisture. The ions inhibit the growth and multiplication of destructive microbes such as fungi and yeast.
