U.S. Steel reorganizes plate operations

To try to improve its position in the plate market, U.S. Steel has moved all its plate-product operations, planning, and sales and marketing to the company's Gary, Ind., mill. The consolidation has created "a lean business unit focused exclusively on selling and producing plates," says C. J. Navetta, general manager, plate products. The consolidation involves relocating some personnel in sales, customer service, and product development to Gary, the location of U.S. Steel's main plate-production facilities. "There is great merit in bringing the production, sales, and planning functions together in this way," Navetta explains. "We think the approach will enable us to achieve a continuous improvement in our responsiveness to customer needs."
