Morphological changes in the spinal cord were studied at the peak of development of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis in rats with different levels of disease symptoms. Light microscopy and immunohistochemical study methods were used. The distribution of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was studied, along with the distributions of the astrocyte marker glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) and the microgliocyte/macrophage marker Iba-1. The morphological signs of experimental allergic encephalomyelitis were found to be non-uniform. Four morphological types of disease were identified, depending on the predominant involvement of the meninges of the spinal cord, vessels, cell nuclei, and conducting pathways in the pathological process.
