Eastern Europe Ambassadors Lobby Washington for US LNG Imports

A group of seven Central and Eastern European countries has appealed to the US Senate majority leader to loosen legal hurdles preventing exports of US LNG to the region and help reduce its dependence on Russia's Gazprom for gas. In a Nov. 14 letter to Republican Sea Mitch McConnell, ambassadors to the US from Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia argue that US LNG exports to Europe would "provide diversity of sources" to aregion "long dominated by an external state-controlled gas supplier ready to use energy as a political weapon"—a thinly veiled reference to Gazprom.
