DOE Lab Finds Coal Plants Can be Flexible, Too

Coal-fired power generation, in comparison with natural gas, is largely understood to be slow to start up and thus an inferior way of backing up intermittent solar and wind when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing. This conventional wisdom is one factor behind US Energy Information Administration predictions that natural gas will continue to gain market share in electricity over time (see graphic).
