Australia's Woodside has sharpened its rivalry with US Chevron in the race to hunt down more gas to feed competing Australian LNG projects, with both firms announcing new finds in the Carnarvon Basin off Western Australia last week. Woodside was first, unveiling a discovery in its Alaric-1 well around 10 miles offshore that could help underpin its Pluto LNG expansion plans. Chevron then said its Acme-1 find could aid with expansion of its own Wheatstone LNG scheme. Woodside said Alaric-1 had intersected more than 600 feet of gross pay, and preliminary analysis "suggests the gas could be comparatively liquids-rich."
