Sasol Mulling First US GTL Plant-Could Compete With LNG Exports

In a surprising development, South African energy giant Sasol said last week that it is considering construction of the first US GTL plant adjacent to its existing chemicals complex at Westlake, Louisiana. The proposed multi-billion dollar facility would produce diesel, kerosene, jet fuel and other middle distillates along with specialty products from natural gas using Sasol's version of the Fischer-Tropsch process. The site is outside of Lake Charles. The announcement might not have been as jolting a decade ago when the Fischer-Tropsch-based natural gas-to-liquids play was one of the hottest topics in the industry.
