Research Centers Created by'Restore' Funds

Funds derived from the 2010 Macondo disaster are helping fund two centers in Texas for subsea engineering and offshore research. Centers at the University of Houston (UH) and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi will be funded by the Eestore Act (Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability, Tourist Opportunities and Revived Economies of the Gulf Coast States), resulting from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry said $4 million in funds given to Texas by BP after the 2010 spill will be distributed to fund both centers. He added that total funding will depend on the civil penalties levied in court.
