During any downturn one of the first items on the trimming list is research and development - but a trio of speakers at the IHS CeraWeek conference said companies should do the exact opposite - keep the R&D dollars flowing for the day the downturn ends. "A downcycle is actually an opportunity," said Muhammad al-Saggaf, the acting head of shared operations and services for Saudi Aramco. "It is easier to find collaborators who are eager to work with you during a downcycle. Many times it's also cheaper."
