The conclusion of the latest study on the impact of oil and natural gas exploration and production in Louisiana should not come as a shock to anyone. The energy industry remains the key driver for the state's economic engine. Louisiana economist Loren Scott's latest report — developed annually for the Mid-Continent Oil and Gas Association — shows that the extraction, pipeline and refining legs of the energy industry provided 62,417 state jobs in 2010. The three segments paid $5 billion in wages to Louisiana households in 2010 — or about 6.8% of the total covered wages in the state.
