Growth in Western Canadian natural gas demand is tied directly to growth in Canada's oil sands region, but recently environmental groups have been comparing the impact of oil sands production on the local flora and fauna to that of the BP Macondo oil blowout in the US Gulf of Mexico to the wetlands and beaches of the Gulf Coast.
