Many of our readers will remember Barry Smith, the Editor of Metals Magazine from 1979 to 1994. Barry died on September 3 and there will be many people who will miss his special brand of being an Aussie Bloke with a huge amount of creativity embedded in his psyche. I first met Barry in 1979 when Rala Publishing company was a fledgling publisher and had just bought the "Castings" magazine from Fred Wierter who was then 91 years old. I was invited to meet the executive and members of the Australian Foundry Institute at a dinner meeting at City Tattersalls Club in Sydney. I was introduced to Barry Smith who shuffled to meet me wearing slippers. He was suffering rheumatoid arthritis. He advised how happy he would be to become the chief provider of information about the foundry industry, on behalf of the AFI, as he was a qualified technical information officer with BHP.
