Influence of varieties and fertilizer levels on growth, seed yield and quality of rice under aerobic condition.

An experiment was conducted on growth, seed yield and quality parameters of rice as influenced by varieties and fertilizer levels in aerobic condition during kharif 2005 and summer 2006 at ZARS, V.C. Farm, Mandya dist. Karnataka, India. The mean data indicated that, application of fertilizer at the rate of 150:75:75 kg NPK ha-1 recorded significantly higher plant height (91.1 cm), number of tillers per hill (25.7) and panicle length (20.9 cm) as compared to other fertilizer levels. Whereas, application of fertilizer at the rate of 125:62.5:62.5 kg NPK ha-1 recorded significantly higher seed yield (46.5 q/ha) as compared to other fertilizer levels. Among different varieties cv. Doddabyranellu recorded significantly higher plant height (125.3 cm), number of tillers per hill (27.8), panicle length (21.8 cm), number of seeds per panicle (225.4), hundred-seed weight (2.8 g) and seed yield (49.6 q/ha) as compared to other varieties. The interaction effect on fertilizer levels and varieties with respect to growth and yield parameters was significant in both the year of experimentation. The quality parameters of seed viz., seed germination (97.3%), root length (13.2 cm), shoot length (7.0 cm) and seedling dry weight (6.0 mg) were observed significantly higher with the application of fertilizer at the rate of 100:50:50 kg NPK ha-1. Among different varieties cv. Doddabyranellu seeds recorded significantly higher seed germination (97.4%), root length (13.5 cm), shoot length (8.3 cm) and seedling dry weight (9.0 mg) as compared to other varieties. Whereas, the interaction effect on fertilizer levels and varieties with respect to quality parameters was significant in both the year of experimentation.
