The effects of fertilizer treatments on the performance of 4 genotypes of onion (Arka Kalyan, Arka Kirthiman and Arka Lalima, and Hybrid-3 as control) were studied in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, during the rabi of 2001-02. The fertilizers consisted of 125:50:125 (F1), 156:63:156 (F2) and 188:75:188 kg N:P2O5:K2O/ha (F3). The uptake of N (182.72 kg/ha), P2O5 (32.50 kg/ha) and K2O (157.45 kg/ha) were highest under F3. Among the genotypes, Arka Kirthiman recorded the highest uptake of N (191.19 kg/ha), P2O5 (34.59 kg/ha) and K2O (162.52 kg/ha). The highest yields were obtained with F3 (41.69 t/ha), Arka Kirthiman (44.73 t/ha), F2 (41.18 t/ha) and Arka Lalima (43.20 t/ha). A negative balance for N, P2O5 and K2O was recorded for all treatments. The residual status and net loss of N (247.32 and -39.12 kg/ha) and K2O (238.19 and -18.25 kg/ha) in soil after harvest were lowest with F2 + Arka Kirthiman.
