A study has shown that alternate-night nocturnal hemodialysis may improve hyperprolactinemia and hypotestosteronemia in men and might result in the re-establishment of the menstrual cycle in young women.Individuals with uremia often have derangements of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis, thought to result from the accumulation of an unknown uremic toxin. In men, these disturbances commonly lead to low serum testosterone levels and increased serum prolactin levels, and in premenopausal women, to anovulatory menstrual cycles and amenorrhea. van Eps and colleagues hypothesized that increased clearance of uremic toxins by using an increased number of hours on dialysis might lead to improvements in the symptoms caused by dysfunction of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis.
