The dramatic karst formations of (ABOVE) reminded the British of cockfight pits when they first saw them in the 17th century. The ups and downs of the region's hillocks created biological islands within an island, where plants and animals evolved in isolation. Many of these species are found nowhere else on Earth; some are observed exclusively on a single hillock.
