The United States has experienced a substantial drop in coal plant output over the last year, nearly 13 percent, with some areas of the country, especially the South, seeing a spectacular drop in coal usage. Some of this reduction is due to the economic recession. However, the dramatic decline in the cost of natural gas, resulting in an increase in output from natural gas-fired plants, has been the dominant factor.
