Determining the factors and mechanisms that enable the molecular features of an odour to be relayed to the olfactory bulb and the olfactory cortex is key to understanding odour information processing. Imamura et al. now show that the timing of mitral cell neurogenesis in the olfactory bulb determines where they project to in the olfactory cortex, shedding some light on the relationship between the odorant receptor map and the olfactory cortex.
