The thermal behaviour of octadecylphosphonic acid (OPA) self-assembled bilayers (SABs) was investigated by atomic force microscopy employing ex situ and in situ annealing treatments. An interesting stacking effect was observed for OPA SABs deposited on different substrates within the temperature range 80-110 deg C, which was associated with the formation of hydrogen bonds between OPA headgroups at the surface of bilayers. Infrared spectroscopy was used to confirm the formation of H-bonds during the stacking process.
