Restricted distribution of Artemisia maritima L., an endangered plant in Kishtwar Himalaya, J&K - role of edaphic factors

Artemisia maritima, an endangered plant belonging to family Asteraceae has gained importance as a source of drug called santonin, highly effective in its action on round worms. It has been reported from some areas in North-Western India. In J&K state,Kishtwar and Gurez are reported to be major regions having flourishing populations of the species containing santonin. The present study has been conducted on four populations of the species all from different areas of Kishtwar plateau, namely Panditgam, Shalimar, Kuleed and Tund. Analysis of soil samples from all the four sites revealed that these have a high available Potash content and Nitrogen status. Soil pH indicated that the soil is slightly acidic to neutral in reaction. The study revealed thatplants of Artemisia maritima have a specific soil requirement to flourish. The present communication puts on record the role of edaphic factors in restricted distribution of this medicinally important and endangered plant species.
