The thesis wayfinding choremes - conceptualizing wayfinding and route direction elements contributes to the cognitively adequate characterization of route information with a special emphasis on aspects of visualizing information that is necessary to reach ones destination. The work is organized into three main areas: First, an extended theoretical treatment of conceptual primitives and how they can be employed in the design of maps. Second, three behavioral experiments that were designed to elicit conceptual knowledge, i.e. conceptual primitives and their interaction.Third, the specification of a grammar, the so called wayfinding choreme route grammar (WCRG), with which it is possible to model route information on a conceptual basis. Additionally, the WCRG is used to guide the design of route maps.
