It's now appreciated that efforts to improve the dynamic charge acceptatnace (DCA) in lead-acid batteries by addition of carbon additives has the side effect of increasing gas evolution rates leading to early dry out. Failure to meet the present acceptance criteria for standard water loss tests has prevented widespread adoption of advanced carbon batteries by automotive OEMs. At Fraunhofer Institute for Scientific Research Center Electromobility, research is underway to find the right form of carbon additive which will improve the critical DCA performance whilst reducing the water loss experienced under testing. If this is succesful, it will enable OEMs to sanction the widspread use of enhanced carbon lead-acid batteries in stop-start automobiles.
