Just as we need oxygen to survive, so do the engines in our utes, tractors and motorbikes. But providing clean air is another matter; it takes only a handful of dust to completely destroy a diesel engine. And with the gravel and sandy tracks most of us drive down every day, dust is one thing that isn't in short supply across Australia. Fortunately, air filters are pretty effective at removing even the finest dust particles, and actually become more efficient the more dust they hold. But they do restrict the flow of air into an engine, which can reduce efficiency, resulting in lower power and increased fuel consumption. A snorkel moves the air intake in a vehicle from engine level to up near roof level, where air is generally freer of dust. It also pressurises the air intake system, helping overcome flow restrictions through the filter and intake plumbing.
